Danielle Hastie

I write stories about misfits, mysteries, and worlds slightly askew. With a background in film, theatre design, and digital art, I bring a visual, character‑rich style to everything I create.

My Story

In high school, I convinced my parents to buy me a season pass to the opera, and I spent weekends at matinee performances of Aida and Madam Butterfly at the Victorian Arts Centre in Melbourne. I loved the stagecraft, the costumes, and the thrill of listening to a live orchestra.

I went on to complete a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Illustration at Queensland College of Art, focusing on children’s book illustration and stage design. My final assessment was designing the stage set for the end‑of‑year performance at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

Soon after, I travelled to Manchester, UK, where I worked briefly as a studio photographer, shooting portfolios with a medium‑format film camera.

Returning to Australia, I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Dramatic Art (Theatre Design) at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne. This gave me valuable skills in designing stage sets and costumes for plays, operas, and street festivals. I was later awarded the NAVA Travelling Scholarship for Emerging Artists, which funded a placement as a Scenic Artist at the San Carlo Opera House in Naples, Italy.

To support my creative practice, I worked as a Senior Visual and Performing Arts Technician at three secondary colleges before moving into the GLAM sector (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums). My roles included Sculpture Technician at Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, and conservation and exhibition work at the National Film and Sound Archive, National Museum of Australia, Australian War Memorial, and National Archives of Australia.

Somewhere in the midst of this career, I completed a Graduate Certificate in Screen Production at Griffith University — a turning point that gave me the skills to become a screenwriter and director. I went on to write and direct three short films: The Last Fortune Cookie, Art, Bars & Scars, and Not Like Me. These films were selected for international festival screenings, and my screenwriting has been recognised in competitions including Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival, ScreenCraft, and HollyShorts.

Most recently, I have completed two novels:

  • Ferals in Space: Mechanica, a middle‑grade science fiction adventure.

  • Bean Spirits, a darkly comic paranormal detective novel.

Both works reflect my love of character‑driven storytelling, blending cinematic pacing with humour, mystery, and imagination.

I continue to build a multidisciplinary creative identity, weaving together fiction, film, and visual art to tell stories that are slightly askew, always heartfelt, and deeply human.

I’m a bower bird of creativity. I use different styles and formats to tell diverse stories on the page, stage and screen.
